Have you recently been distracted by the ups and downs of life? If so, I am right there with you. Life can be so beautiful, but it can also be filled with an overwhelming amount of responsibilities. Lately, it’s been important for me to push past my daily to-do list to focus on more relaxing activities. Abstract art is that calming activity for me. 😌
Over the years, I’ve discovered that creating abstract art is like a dance. You can move and shift in any direction that you want because your imagination is the only thing that’s in control. With everything happening in the world, we all need small moments to clear our minds of the daily issues that we absorb.
This month, I want to share a new mindfulness artistic exercise to help you create with your heart, and learn to relax your inner thoughts. This tutorial involves painting dome shapes, dots, and lines to bring together a structured, yet freeing abstract piece. While painting this piece, I want to encourage you to consider the good things that may be occurring in your life. Even if it’s only one thing, I want you to focus on it and the positive emotions that stem from it. Okay, are you ready to leave some burdens behind? Let’s gather our supplies.
Here’s the supply list to create this piece:
- Abstract Template (Click Here)
- Canvas
- 2-4 colors of Folk Arts Acrylic Paint
- Ruler
- Clear Paint Palette
- (4) Medium Paint Brushes and (3) Small Paint Brushes.
- Towel
- Water Bowl
- Sakura Mechancial Pencil
- Speedball B nib with holder (Optional)
- Sumi Calligraphy Ink (Optional)
Let’s Start Painting!
Step 1. Start by choosing 2-4 colors of paint from Folk Art’s celebration set. If you don’t own this set, feel free to use whatever paint you have in your stash.
Step 2. Seal off your canvas by adding painter’s tape.
Step 3. Use a pencil to sketch the abstract template onto your canvas. I used a protractor to create straight lines and curves.
Step 4. Add the acrylic paint to your paint palette, then start painting on your canvas.
Step 5. Clean up the dome shapes with your detailed paintbrushes.
Step 6. (Optional Ink Painting) Feel free to continue painting the dome shapes with your fourth color or use the B nib to add ink instead. Speedball’s B-nib is a great tool for creating curves, waves, circles, dots, and lines.
Step 7. Remove the painter tape and celebrate your artwork!
