Lately, I’ve been super interested in learning about mediterranean spices after deep diving into Shred Happens Mediterranean Cookbook by Arash Hashemi.
Seriously, if you’re a cookbook lover but haven’t checked this book out, I’m just going to say you’re totally missing out on some yummy meals and spices.

scroll to the bottom of the page and enjoy. Okay, back to some spice talk!
I was inspired to develop my own spices after making Arash’s Greek and Shawarma seasoning. The process made me think about how we truly don’t need a lot of salt to have flavorful food. After purchasing a mortar and pestle from my local spice shop, I went to Amazon to research spice-making books. So far, I have purchased The Spice of Science book and rented The Spice Companion from Libby.

🗣️ Interaction Moment 💬
Have you ever made a spice, sauce, or salad dressing? If so, please share tips or tricks to help us create something delicious!
Alright, I don’t like to hold you too long with blogs, here’s the new blend I tossed together. If you have any allergies to a specific herb or spice, be sure to omit the spice. It may turn out even better than mine!

Sweet & Savory
Equipment
- Mortar and Pestle
Ingredients
- 1 Tsp Cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp Allspice Berries Grind and Toast at 255℉
- 1 Tsp Coriander
- ½ Tsp Ginger
- ½ Tsp Sumac
- 1 Tsp Majoram
- ½ Tsp Pepper Grinded Jar from Trader Joes
- 1 Tsp Thyme
- 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
The food I used to test this spice was chopped chicken breast and eggs for morning toast. I’m a veggie lover, so I will add it to kale or broccoli this week to see if it elevates the taste.
Here’s how to test the spice with chicken breast:
- Chop three breasts and place aside.
- With medium heat, coat the skillet with olive oil and drop two garlic bulbs inside. Let simmer for 30 seconds.
- Add chicken, then sprinkle 1 1/2 Tsp of the Sweet & Savory Spice and stir until the chicken is a little golden.

👩🏾🍳 Cooking THOUGHTS ⏲️
I did not place any salt inside the recipe, yet the chicken tasted as if I had added a pinch of salt. Upon further research, I found that chicken breast already has roughly 70mg of salt per breast, which for me is approximately 210mg of salt. So that means as I was cooking, the salt from the chicken breast meshed with the spice to create a balanced taste. The same goes for the water inside the chicken. This made a difference in how long I needed to cook it to achieve my golden pieces.
This experience taught me to consider the salt in the meat before having a salt-shaking party with premade grocery store seasonings.
As someone who has dealt with high blood pressure after popping Eli out, it’s my goal for my family to not intake large amounts of sodium.
Review it & Comment 📝
I would love to know how you use this spice. C’mon back and share your thoughts with us.
This will not be the last blog cracking the code on spice blends. I may do a spice blend of the month based on the season, but either way I’m looking forward to seeing what other mediterranean spices I can develop.
✂️ Free SVG File of the month ✂️
I started working on more SVG cut files for people who use machines like the Silhouette, Cricut, GCC cutter, and all the new cutting machines on the market 🤣. This month, we have Mr. Squirrel! I will release the other SVG files through email, so if you aren’t on the list, sign up below.

Alright, that’s it for today! I pray that you have an excellent weekend.
Until next time, whatever you do, make it with zeal!
